Agent Orange Rehabilitation

When one takes steps for others he sometimes forgets to consider the consequences of his actions.  For many victims past, many others still suffer or begin to suffer. Agent Orange is a cycle that continues well after its gone.

The Honour of Medals

It all started at the ‘Y-Bridge’, the bridge that spans the Arroyo Canal in the 8th district of the former Saigon.  It was a full on battle for an urban area using air power, artillery, armour, against well dug in Vietcong and North Vietnamese regulars.  A tropical Grozny or a Beirut without the high rise apartments.  Unlike Groznyy and Beirut, the torture was all over in a week though the majority of streets were fronted by rubble and skeletal ruins.  Photographers and camera crews had stood exposed on the bridge to shoot the 750lb bombs dropping into suburbia ... continued.

By all reports, Perpignan and Arles are getting very precious and virtually snobbish about their raccontes photographique. The real thing zoomed past us in W.A. last week, a full tilt 24/7 programme of the laid back, deadly serious and awesomely back-lit. The spectrum of images encompassed, frames made on large format, the super –wide, the exotic, the digital, though the classic 35mm held the high ground; both in colour and perfectly executed black and white. They were displayed in an eclectic set of locales in Fremantle, a city full of charm.  The Drill Hall Galleries as HQ, former... continued.

Restoring Peace in Timor

The youngest nation on the planet is in deep strife again.  Just when we thought that the intervention in ’99 had got it all stabilized, just when the U.N. had pumped in a quarter of a billion dollars and believed all was on line; the feral elements reared their heads and chaos ensued.Liberation and independence from Portuguese colonial rule in ’75 had been both won and a lengthy struggle.  It was only to be supplanted a few months later by an Indonesian takeover and a quarter century of neo colonialisation.   Admittedly the country received more development und... continued.

Dili

It’s raining on my bed, oops, no ‘tis only the air con splashing on the bedside cabinet.  It is a quiet Saturday thank goodness as the Dili bug has struck along with strange dreams from inside the gold mine. The next night ants would ingress my cell size cot (a child’s divan) nipping my neck awake at 0200 hours and again at 0300 red centipedes an inch or so long, creep about the industrial carpet floor.  No more whinging, the streets are afire beyond the hotels walled compound on the sea front half a klick from the port where massive naval assault freighters line the... continued.

Dom Bosco World Cup

It was the first time that everyone had a smile on their face. After two plus solid weeks of arson, looting, deaths and dissolution in this deteriorating third world country - the newest nation in the world, gales of laughter were emanating from the refugee/IDP camp on the eastern outskirts of Dili.  The source, under tens playing their own version of the World Cup.Timor L’este was still in turmoil. The capital Dili, a sprawl of 130,000 folks now found half of its population recast as refugees or IDP’s (internally displaced people), obliged to seek sanctuary outside embassies ... continued.

Staying Alive in the Fast Lane

I’m always wondering how we can still make a reasonable living out of the photojournalistic craft.  Taking frames, capturing remarkable moments is almost a doddle compared to the downstream travail of editing and then on to trying to vend the stuff.  In an age of shrinking and specialized markets it is becoming harder to flog hard core subjects, cutting edge traumatic images; the advertisers loathe to put their products against disturbing reality.  The competition is fierce.  It is hard to duel with staffers from the papers and wires who fat budgets, expense accounts ... continued.

Baxtor Refugee Detention Centre Protests Easter 2k4

It could have been Agincourt or Plessey, spool forward and it could have been the Battle of Naseby.  It was South Australia, Easter weekend 2003, with the forces of the willing arraigned against the merry tribe of the free and unfettered.  The star war robo cops were defending the once free, now refugee detainees, interred for their quest for the democratic and liberated. The free and the oppressed were separated by 5 metre high, 5000 volt electrified fences and razor wire topped with the latest in high tech surveillance paraphernalia.  The dead ground between the perimeter and w... continued.
